Interesting Events
- Bavìo delle Botti a Montepulciano
In Montepulciano on the last Sunday of August there is the Bravìo delle Botti in which 2 "pushers" per district push 80 kg barrels through the streets of Montepulciano, until they reach the churchyard of the Cathedral in Piazza Grande. In the week preceding the Bravìo numerous shows can be seen and in each of the 8 districts it is possible to taste the real Tuscan cuisine prepared by the "housewives".
- Live Rock Festival
In Acquaviva (well yes… 2 km from Metina) live rock music, food and excellent beer! All concerts are free. 1st weekend of September.
- Bruscello
in Montepulciano: “semi-itinerant” theatre company. The show is entirely in "Tuscan" (apparently there is no real Tuscan dialect!)
- Teatro povero di Monticchiello
On the main square of this delightful and very small village, the inhabitants of Monticchiello stage an "autodrama" every year. Between July and August.
- Palio di Siena
Definitely one of the best known (and criticised) events in Italy. It takes place every year on July 2nd and August 16th.
- Giostra del Saracino ad Arezzo
in Arezzo Historical re-enactment of Arezzo: a jousting tournament which takes place on the penultimate Saturday of June and the first Sunday of September. Giostra del Saracino also takes place in Sarteano and Città della Pieve as well.
- Trasimeno blues Festival
Blues music festival on the shores of Lake Trasimeno: it takes place in the month of July.
- Torrita Blues Festival
takes place at the end of June: 4 days dedicated to the Blues in Torrita di Siena
- Eurochocolate
International Chocolate Exhibition: in Perugia every year in March and October
- Carnevale di Foiano della Chiana
Carnival festival.
- Umbria Jazz
Renowned Jazz music festival which takes place in the first half of July in Perugia and its surroundings.
FESTIVALS
There are so many village fairs and festivals that it is impossible to name them all! These are our absolute favorites… but we can recommend many more!
- Festa della Madonna del Cerro
The festival/feast we like best. It takes place in a magnificent “cerraia” (a forest of secular oaks) guaranteeing coolness even in the hottest hours. It takes place on some weekends between the end of June and the beginning of July. Near Tre Berte (Municipality of Montepulciano)
- Sagra del fungo e della castagna
Mushroom and chestnut festival at Vivo d'Orcia, on Monte Amiata, between the beginning and mid-October.
